Was That Fun?

I played golf today. Golfing is not a natural talent for me at all. I struggle now just like I have for the last 20 years. It seems to me that I might be asking myself, "Was that fun?". If it isn't, why do I keep playing?

As I drove into my carport with the golf game still on my mind, I was wondering how many things that I choose to do during the week fall into the "fun" column. In fact, is there even one thing I do that makes me laugh? Good question don't you think.

Happiness is part of a well lived life I think. But is fun a necessary ingredient for happiness? I wonder.

I like to play golf and if I get to actually laugh and have fun doing it, it is a bonus. But I will not quit if I play a round or two with unsmiling women. The actual act of golfing makes me happy.

Writing is one of my favorite things to do but it does not generally fall into the "fun" category either. I do really like the conversations with commenters. That is fun I think.

I like to cook, watch TV, read, shop, throw a party and walk. I suppose each one of those can be fun on occasion....but not always.

So what do you think...is "fun" overrated? Do we need to be feeling jolly to be happy. Or is it enough to be content or simply enjoying oneself? You tell me.

  1. I think there are different degrees of fun - your golf being say Level 1 on the fun meter.
    Riding a rollercoaster - level 3.
Thrift shopping - level 5 on the fun meter.

    1. Tami, I loved this. For me FUN on a 10 meter would be watching a video of kittens and children playing. Perfect!

  2. I have never thought about "fun". I agree Tami, there are differend levels and qualifiers of fun; casual, relaxed, little girl, raucous and the list goes on. And yes, in that case fun is really important. Too much of early life was spent being responsible.

    1. For me too...an early life of work, children and worry was not much fun. But now??? If it is not fun it at least needs to be interesting or give me pleasure.

  3. I aree golf is not always fun...it can be rewarding, frustrating, exhilarating, but seldom fun.

    1. Boy do I hear you. Once in awhile I will play with a group or my husband and laugh a lot. I don't necessarily play good golf but that is another thing altogether. When I do that I feel good about myself. I suppose that is important too.

  4. Dancing is the most fun of all. Or listening to a really good band in a small venue so that you almost feel part of the music as you beat on the table in time to the music. Or playing charades with uninhibited friends. Or playing Mad Gabs with my college-age granddaughters. I have at times laughed until my stomach ached playing games with the young folks. I do have fun but not as often as I would like to. Good question. It made me think of things I want to do more often.

    1. Oh my gosh, I had forgotten those fun things and I do mean fun. Thank you for the reminder.

  5. To me satisfaction often trumps fun on my scale of life. Am I doing things that make me get out of myself and into others. Reading and studying are necessary parts of continuing to grow as a human being, not always fun but certainly satisfying. Loving others instead of yourself; again satisfying but not always fun. Recycling to make the world a little greener,... you get the idea.

I just see fun is about me and satisfaction is about others. But that is probably just my weird view of life. :)

    1. You are so right RJ. We could all spend more time thinking of others. We live a very small life if we don't. Thank you.

  6. I love to go on brisk walks with my friends, and my hikes with the Senior Trailblazers, while not exactly fun, is extremely satisfying. To me fun is going to a great movie with a friend and then having dinner together. Good question! :-)

    1. My husband is my best friend and I will say we laugh when we "play" together. Travel is an adventure but with my husband it is fun too.
