Park Model living with cats and dogs! There are rules!

RULES IN THE RV PARK
Do RV resorts allow pets?  And if they do what will be the restriction?  These are very valid questions and ones that you need to ask before you park your RV, buy or rent a park model.  RV resort are much like motels when it comes to our pets.   In our RV resort there are two locations that pets are allowed.  At the back of the park there is a block of lots that are designated for pets called "Doggy Row".  On that street people can have a pet in their park models and can walk their animal on a leash on the streets.  Access to a back gate allows those pet owners to walk their dogs in Pantano Wash.  It is assumed that if you buy in that location you are not going to be compaining about barking dogs...you will know they are going to bark.  Pets are also allowed in the RV spaces and the gate is close by so owners can walk their pets outside the park.  The plan has worked very well for many years.  If you are a cat owner and can keep your cat indoors, you can have the pet anywhere in the park.  But don't think you can let that cat out to wander around, even at night.  I suppose that if I wanted to walk my cat, I would need to have the cat on a lease and put it in the car to take it to a designated walking area.  It is just the rules and everyone follows them.

PETS IN THE RV
We traveled with a cat one winter after the cat adopted us in the middle of our vacation.  It was not an easy thing to do but I know that a lot of people take their cats and dogs along in their motor homes.  There are window boxes that can be installed in a window that opens so you cat or small pet can sit inside and see what is going on in the outside world.  I always thought one of those would be cool.  I am sure that Camping World has just the things you need to make your pet at home.   My cat was a "pill" so he never was allowed to travel with us again.  However, we are considering bringing him to the desert with us next year.  We miss him when we are gone.

If you choose to take your pet with you, just remember the rules I mentioned above are very typical of RV Resorts.  While they love their animals they have rules about their place.

WHY KEEP YOUR PET?
In the United States 63% of all households own pets.  According to Pets Help "pets are like "emotional vitamins." If you feel better psychologically and emotionally, every system in your body is going to function more efficiently. The 65-plus population, particularly vulnerable to loneliness and stress-related diseases, can reap enormous benefits from pet companionship."  In a word pets help keep us healthy.  The choices you make about your pet really does matter.

Happy travels and have a wonderful day.

Protecting Against Skin Cancer in a Recession...inexpensive skin products in the news!

no make-up
happy inside my skin!

When I got past the fact that skin creme is never going fix what has been done to my skin for 68 years and moved on to preventing skin cancer and being comfortably attractive, I was relieved.  Now I can go about my life relaxed inside my own skin.  I live 6 month a year in Arizona and I love sunshine.  I am learning to protect what I cannot change.  It is a good thing! And I am becoming a smarter shopper.

Today I am shopping for moisturizer/sunblock.  To begin my search I did something I have never done before....I actually looked at ratings for the products online based on price and quality.    I don't know about you but I am always shocked when I go to the department store counter and am told that a small bottle of lotion is $$$$$.  Gulp!  While I can afford it I am not a dunce.  $$$$$ does not work for me.  So I went looking for some information that did not have a connection with any particular product.  A search on google for "inexpensive moisturize sunscreen in the news" led me to dallasnews.com, the online version of The Dallas Morning News.  Today in an article called "Find the best inexpensive sunscreen and moisturizer" they talked about the importance of using sunscreen even when money is tight.  I was very interested in what they had to say.

Dr. Clay J. Cockerell of Dermpath Diagnostics Cockerell & Associates in Dallas says even in an economic downturn, you shouldn't neglect your health. And skin protection is vital to good health.

"You might save a dollar or two here and there, but you'll pay in the long run," says Cockerell. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.

Yike!  I may have been wrong to think that skin products are a frivolous purchase.  It seems that while consumers have cut back on moisturizers 10% in the last year, they may have put themselves at risk for skin cancer.  There is no need for this to happen.  Dallas News has rated the skin products AND found products that are affordable.  Their choices were:
Avon Ageless Results Renewing Day Cream SPF 15 ($15 for 1.7 ounces)
Clinique City Block Sheer Oil-Free Daily Face Protector SPF 25 ($16.50 for 1.4 ounces)
Good Skin All Bright Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 30 ($12 for 1.7 ounces)
Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion SPF 15 ($18.99 for 2.5 ounces)
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream Night Formula ($13.99 for 1.4 ounces)

You will notice that all of these products are under $20...not bad.  Plus they can be purchased at your local drug store.  I have used Cetaphil products because they do not contain  perfumes.  I have asthma so perfumes are my enemy.  Cetaphil is affordable and the quality is great. But I think I will try something new and the Clinique product may be the one.  I like the oil free part.

So here is a little trick I have learned about that foundation.   Putting on foundation to cover a little bit of the damage is good but most products are simply too heavy and cause my skin to break out.  Still I love a little makeup.  I have found that if I buy a semi-expensive foundation...I love Este Lauder...and mix a very small amount with my moisturizer in the palm of my hand, I can kill two or three birds with one stone.  The feel is wonderful and I have sunscreen, moisturized, foundation applied all at once.  My skin does not break out and the light feel of the makeup is just the look I like.  Some days I apply blush and most day my Este Lauder mascara.  It is a very natural look and perfect for my lifestyle.

So there you have it...a day in the life of Barbara's skin...sigh!

When One of Us is Ill, Both of Us Are in Danger! Senior Citizens

or Spouses Mirror Each Other Health.

Are retired women more knowledgeable than retired men when it comes to everyday health issues?  Because I am a retired woman living 6 month of the year in a 55+ RV resort and am in close contact with retired men, I think I have the answer.  But let me give you some facts first.

Every woman's magazine, be it Glamour or More, has an article on health issues.  For example, the latest More (a magazine for women of style and substance, i.e. older women) magazine has a lengthy article on hearing loss and Glamour has a whole section called health and fitness.  The hits you will get for health articles in women's magazines using a google search will come up at more than 9,000,000...yes that is right.  On the other hand when I changed the word women's to men's the google hits fell to 800,000.  When I looked at men's magazines alone they were 80,000,000 hits.  It was 90,000,000 for women.  The ratio just didn't line up.

The fact that women are, it seems to me, more obsessed with health, weight gain, and the look of their body may account for this.  But that is not what I am asking.  The question was "are woman more knowledgeable?"  I have listened to women talk about health issues and I have listened to men.  The women are quick to give answers but are kind of bored with the whole subject.  What they will talk about though, is their husband's reluctance to take their advice, go to a doctor or even eat and drink smartly!  Men on the other hand are blown away when they discover that dark green leafy vegetables are good for them and that they may have a health issue if their stool is black!  It is all so new to them.  They just do not know!  They are so fascinated with their new knowledge their gathering can be dominated by "organ recitals".  Sigh!

Now the question is what difference does it make...that is why we have doctors and yearly exams, right?  Well, here is a thought...if my husbands has symptoms and I know something is really wrong,  I will call the doctor and make an appointment using my strength to overcome his resistance.  Unlike many women I do take some responsibility for my husband's health and he for mine.  Why?  My best answer is that my vision of how his health effects mine and vice versa is very clear to me.  What makes him ill will change my life forever one day if my health does not change his first.

I truly believe that when one of us is ill, both of us are in danger.  If your spouse doesn't understand this, you need to work on his/her awareness.  Think about it.

Retirement...a day in the life! Free steak, recipes and a good rant!

FREE BEEF CONTEST!!

Chefdruck Musings....I love beef...especially if it is free.  Do you love beef, especially if it is free?  Go to the link I have provided, follow the instructions, and wait to see if you might win a gift certificate for Omaha steaks.  I did.

Chefdruck Musings also features a Foodie Blogroll in the sidebar with lists of giveaway contests for food, books, etc.  I have applied for this list for this blog but I am not sure I will be allowed to post it.  In the mean time go to the chef's blog to enter other contests.

Free beef...nummanum!

THINGS THAT BOTHER ME...A LOT!!

I am home in Portland (Hillsboro, Oregon).  I live in a neighborhood designed for living without a car.  I can walk to a grocery store, Starbucks, a kitchen store (Kitchen Kaboodle) and several restaurants.  They are very social places, not quiet nor boring!  They are like our home away from home...living rooms of sorts.   I love that!

So why do people (women in particular) think that places that we consider to be our living rooms are a good location for an interview?  Interviewing a prospective employee within earshot of everyone in the neighborhood is not an acceptable thing to do.  Go to an office or even a private room in the library, which incidentally also has a coffee shop.  We don't want to listen to a prospective employee bare their soul.  PLEASE DON'T DO THAT!  DON'T DO THAT!

FOOD CHOICES...fresh salmon!

I walked to our New Season's grocery store yesterday and picked up a couple of salmon fillets for dinner for my son's family.  The fillets cost me around $8.00 a pound.  The fillets were frozen but they were also wild caught...in Alaska I suppose.  I thought it was a very good price for the best salmon around.  (New Season's is a gourmet grocery chain comparable to Whole Foods but smaller and owned locally.)    For my son I placed the salmon in foil pouches, seasoned with the Montreal Seasoning and topped with sliced lemon.  They will bake the salmon at 350 degrees about 20 minutes or until the salmon is done. The lemon is even wonderful when I create this simple, simple recipe.

I like to cook my salmon in a small toaster oven. Remember I am retired and I only cook for my husband and myself.  I squeeze lemon over the top, season with Montreal Seasoning (excellent stuff) and bake on a rack for about 20 minutes...until the fish flakes.

We are spoiled here in the northwest...the fish is always so fresh.

Incidentally, if you are retired and there are only two or one of you, BUY A GOOD TOASTER OVEN!  It well be the best purchase you ever make.  Cooking small is no reason to give up wonderful recipes!

COME BACK AND SEE ME SOMETIME!

If you are interested in something you don't see on the blog, let me know.  There is nothing like hearing the information from the "horses mouth".  I live in Oregon and have all my life.  I am retired and live in an award winning neighborhood with condos, cottages and brownstone/work-live homes.  I also am a snowbird that spends 6 mo. in Tucson AZ. in a RV resort.  I live very "small" in the desert.  Maybe I know something that might help you make retirement decisions.  I would like to write without guessing what you want to know.

Have a wonderful day!

Decorating a Tiny House/Apartment...Link to Links!

photo from Land Choices http://www.landchoices.org/media/index.htm

Apartment Therapy...At both ends of our lives we seem to live in cramped spaces.  When we are starting out, we live in a space that barely lets you change you mind let alone rearrange the furniture.  I am one of those people at the other end of that life...the retired, downsized mature person living in small spaces once again.  And you know what....I LOVE IT!!!  I rearrange my furniture and change my mind...maybe I  have less of both at this time in my life.

My husband and I fill our spaces with our being and living.  We are not big people so we don't require much space.  The kitchen dance has gotten to be a kind of ritual with us...if we are cranky, one person just goes away and waits their turn. This works when we live with one small bathroom too.

If you are like me, you probably are interested in seeing how other people live.  If you live in 650 square feet or less, you won't find much information to help you make some useful changes.  I guess that is why I was so excited when I found the Apartment Therapy website today.  Resources and Sites for Small Spaces was one of the articles they listed as a top blog. This link led me to another article in Mindful Metropolis called Small Solutions, Finding Peace in a Pint Sized Home.  Discardia is a lean and mean little website that has suggestions for simplifying our life plus you can sign up to get twitter tips on de-cluttering every day.
Discardia is the time to get rid of things that no longer add value to your life, shed bad habits, let go of emotional baggage and generally lighten your load. (Discardia website)
These are just samples of what you will find.

Retirement Bliss...a little work and a little sun!!!

I swore when I retired I would never get up in the dark again.  Boy was I wwwwrrrronnng!!!
It was a pipe dream, sleeping in every morning.  I did not count on my three children having 11 grandchildren.  The youngest will be 39 and his wife just had the latest grandchild.  I am getting up in the dark again and hanging out with the baby's big brother as his mom and dad tend to doctor appointments.  My alarm went off  at 6:00 a.m this morning.  I drank a cup of coffee sitting up in my bed snoozing and waiting for the second alarm.  Then I dressed and headed down the road in the early morning light.

Retirement has taught me that those things I had come to think of as important after my children left home so I could live a carefree life...me-me-me-me, my sleep, how I look as I head down the road...aren't!  I have found I still love helping my family when I am needed.  The rest of the time I sleep in, sit in the Arizona sunshine, golf, write, read, cook beautiful meals and stake my claim on retirement bliss.

Have a wonderful day!

Inside the RV Resort Life Style...retirement living

note:  This is an older post but it gives you a glimpse into everyday life in our RV resort in Tucson, AZ.  Rincon Country East has been our home for 4 years now.  This particular park model has since sold to a lady in her 80's.  We are all healthy and happy...still!  The ages of our neighbors range from low 50's to upper 80's.  It is a very good and interesting mix. All the phone numbers posted here are still active.
Our Current Park Model

October, 2008

I am in the dessert...back in the Waiting Room for Heaven. We are early this years so we are waiting patiently for the rest of the people to arrive. Some will be along soon, some are not well enough to come and some are already here. We love the serenity of this place. We are never lonely, we are never wanting for things to do and our friends are so close that we can just walk across the street to visit.

We have moved to a new home here. A home came up for sale at the end of our street with a view of the mountains and just across the street from the tennis courts and the pickle ball courts. We have set up a table on the east side of the home so we can eat breakfast in the early morning sun and have a cocktail in the shade in the after noon. It is very warm now...temps in the 90's during the day but they drop to 80 by 5:00. Perfect.

I have not been blogging so much. It has been a good break for me. Blogging can go from being an outlet to being an obsession...have you noticed? I needed to break the cycle and I will be back as soon as we move the computer down the street and find a home for it in the bedroom.

Old Park Model
<-Theadora, the flamingo with lights inside and pink paint on the outside has moved with us. We love her. She has lived at several homes and now she is ours. The other residents are sure we are nuts...was there any question. :)

So that is where we are. Tucson, AZ.  Our park model will be for sale...these little doll houses are so affordable that middle class residents use them as second homes and those older folks on Social Security can afford a nice year round home in a secure gated community. Rincon Country East RV Resort (8989 E. Escalante, Tucson, AZ 85730 Toll Free 888·401·8989 Phone 520·886·8431) is one of the top rated parks in AZ. yet remains small and friendly. While part of the park is reserved for large motor homes a large portion of the resort is occupied by park models. We buy the home and then pay monthly rent to the owner of the park. We have a beautiful pool, a large recreation auditorium where dance with live music are held. There is a laundry and a coffee/mail room with residents gather morning and after noon for a visit with friends. We range in age from mid-fifties to over ninety. There is something and someone for everyone.

Several models are for rent in this resort. I pinch myself every day...we are so lucky.

Vietnamese Pho Tango Restaurant, 22139 Imbrie Dr. Hillsboro, Oregon

Hạ Long Bay, a Natural World's Heritage Site i...Image via Wikipedia
Eating is possibly my favorite thing in the world...world being the key thing here.  I love ethnic food.  Authentic Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, Thai with a little German and French thrown in here and there.  Tonight I went to one of my favorite "mall restaurants" here in our area, Pho Tango.

My husband and I had visited this restaurant over Christmas Holidays at lunch hour.  Pho Tango, an authentic Vietnamese restaurant, was fill with Vietnamese young people that work in the area.  Intel and nail salons employ a great many of them.  We had to wait to be seated.

The restaurant is located in a Fred Meyer mall on Imbrie Drive just across from Cornelius Pass Roadhouse (a great brewpub) in a building that used to house a pizza parlor. (map)  The new owners added paint and walled the kitchen in then decorated with pictures of Vietnam.  But all that is not important...the food is what we like.  I am stuck on the noodles served with Thai basil, hot peppers and bean sprouts on the side.  My daughter and I ordered a combination special that included two bowls of soup, an appetizer and our drink and paid less than $20.   Menu here.

I recommend  Pho Tango as a good lunch stop when you are on the Westside or at the Hillsboro Stadium for an event.  Lunch prices are very reasonable and Monday/Tuesday evening are nights that prices are reduced on noodle dishes by almost 50%.  I think you will like it.

Skype Keeping Retirees Connected or Grandpa Lives in the Computer

Image representing Skype as depicted in CrunchBase

Image via CrunchBase
I know I have told you that our grandson aged 2 years thinks Grandpa lives in the computer.  It may just be so...who knows.

Because of a family emergency and my need to help my son as his new born gets a stronger hold on life, I will be home for three weeks.  Skype is my link to my husband who has stayed in Arizona with friends in the sunshine.  My husband and I both have Skype accounts and we own three computers.  Two are in the desert with my husband and we leave the old laptop here in Hillsboro for use during holidays and times like this when we are without the other computers.  So the Skype accounts can be used on any computer with the program...I am learning more about this wonderful FREE service all the time.

When I began trying to reach my husband I realized that his account was not only on this computer but also on his computer in Arizona.  Skype was not going to let me call...it said I could not talk to myself.  It was just a little frustrating...I talk to myself better than the average person.    I have been thinking about how to make this work for a week now.  I was looking at my Skype contact list this morning when I realized that at the top, where my husband's name was, there was a button that allowed me to choose a different account. (Where the red minus is in the picture.)  Sure enough, when I clicked the little green button there was my account.  When I signed into my account, my husband appeared in the contact list....yeah!!!  I dug out my old isight camera, connected it to the computer and I was one connected Grandma again!

So this evening while I was having my wine, we chatted as though we were in the same room.  He watched the basketball game over the top of the computer screen and I blathered on and on.  I liked it...that is my comfort zone!

Brayden could be right...Grandpa may live in the computer.  Thank heavens, when we apart, I know just where to find him.  I just thought you would want to know.

Sushi....Syun Izakaya Bar...a little piece of Japan in Oregon

What's Cooking in America???  No it is not a question...it is a website featuring reviews of local restaurants from around the country.  In this particular case, the Portland, Oregon Metro Area.  I have written about a wonderful sushi Izakaya Bar called Syun Izakaya Japanese Restaurant (map) located in, of all places the basement of an old library in Hillsboro, Oregon.  The website described the restaurant:

You wouldn't suspect Hillsboro of harboring a great Japanese restaurant - but it does. The restaurant is situated in the basement of the old Hillsboro library building. Izakaya" means "pub" in Japanese, so the non-sushi items are all smaller portions, kind of like a Japanese tapa restaurant. The name, Syun Izakaya  means "fresh seasonal sake pub". The charming decor here features tatami-style window dressings and sake bottles lining the walls. This restaurant is definitely a little piece of Japan in Oregon!

Honestly, this is so authentic you might forget where you are.  A lady sitting near the entrance to the bar told me she was from Hawaii and had been to the bar at least twenty times since she recently moved to the area.  Honors include mentions in magazines such a Bon Appetite, Zagats and a ranking as one of Portland's top 100 restaurants.

We were told when we walked into the bar that we would have to wait 45 minutes without reservations...a wait we were willing to endure.  But, because people at the bar were leaving, we were seated within a few minutes.  I have decided that we will always sit in this same place.  We had front row seat for preparation and presentation of the food.  It will take us a few times at the restaurant to learn the menu but they have variety selections that make it possible to taste a little of everything.  One of those choices was just $10.00.

Inlaws, Outlaws and Grandparenting

Not everyone gets to be a grandparent.  I remind myself of this fact when I worry about the baby or the teenager.  It is a huge privilege to be included in their lives.

It is a fact though that being included in our grandchildrens lives mean that we must also be loved by our children-in-laws.  I love them without question.  On the other hand, I am not as lovable as I could be sometimes.  In my rush to fill their needs I find that I overstep the boundaries and invade their comfort zones.  Thank heavens they are forgiving and see my efforts as good although misguided...sometimes.

Then there are the "outlaws"...the children-in-law's parents.  They are well meaning and wonderful people.  Here, it seems, is a whole different dilemma.  You must understand, as I am trying too, that they too want to "rush" to their children's aid.  It is a train wreck waiting to happen.  Respectful dimuring negotiations go on as we tip toe around each other while marking territories and boundaries.  Holy Moly!!!!

So if you are working on aging with grace, helping your children as they struggle through life and surviving human relationships that you did not choose, welcome to my world.

I am in Portland trying to assist my son and his family get through the trauma of having their newborn baby in Neonatal Immediate Care Unit.  Here is hoping that I can actually not be more of a hurt than a help.

Have a great day.

What you need to know to change flight reservations in an emergency! (Delta Airlines)

A Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-232 landing at Va...Image via Wikipedia
My new grandson was born by c-section on Saturday and developed breathing problems. His condition worsened rapidly and he was moved to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit  at St. Vincents Hospital in Portland Oregon.  I had made reservations with Orbitz online to leave Tucson in two weeks.  I would then help the family as others had to leave.  But as things turned bad, I realized that I would need to change the reservation and leave immediately.

So the question was "WHO DO YOU CALL?"  After a quick thought process, I by passed Orbitz and called my Delta Skymiles number, and explained my dilemma to a representative.  He was very helpful and gave me the price for the change. I was shocked when the price he quoted was more than the price I had just seen online for the exact same flight.  Then I reiterated my problem...very ill baby, family in need, time was of the essence.  That was when he began listening to me in earnest.  I did have to gather information:
  1. phone number for hospital
  2. hospital address
  3. doctor's name and number.
  4. copy of your original reservation
  5. your frequent flier number if you have one.
  6. credit card...it is going to cost some more.
  7. a carefully thought through explanation of your problem...make sure they understand.
If you have a real emergency, the airlines might be able to help you.  I don't know if they call the hospital and check but I am thinking they might,  so be honest!  Delta Airlines came through with enough help for me so that I could travel home.  I am so grateful for this service that they provide.  It is wonderful.

But there is more.  There was a question about my choice.  My husband and I had the discussion...should I have called Obitz instead????  In order for both of us to rest easy about the cost,  I called Obitz, explained my situation and asked for their price to change the reservation....it came to around $600 for a oneway ticket.  It was then I realized how very grateful I was to Delta and their service representatives. My ticket home will cost around $280.  Quite a difference.

I will be home before midnight tonight.

My advice????  Find out  how this works now...look the information up and store it away for that day when you are emotionally not able to deal with a huge problem.  Take notes and write down numbers.  I wish I had been better informed.

I just thought you would want to know.

Are you a "Fudge Queen"? How you identify with food!

Gabe-birthday-partImage via Wikipedia
In my wanderings around the internet this morning I noticed an article from Rebuilding Wellness by Sue Ingebretson.  She had some interesting ideas about choosing your identity and how it relates to your physical well being.  She began with with the words, "Do you know who you are?" and then went on to say:
I’m talking about our “food identity” — who we believe ourselves to be, in relationship to food. Think about the friend who considers herself the “Donut Diva” because she brings donuts to every breakfast meeting at work. Then there’s the “Goodies Goddess” who totes homemade sweets to women’s meetings or to the classroom for her child’s holiday and birthday parties.
I thought it was such an interesting idea.  We have all said "I am the ________Queen!  Just show me a ______________ and I will______________."  I think you should read this article.  The idea that we can change our health by changing the way we identify with food is very interesting.  The article was called "Identity Theft and Donut Divas".

Just a thought!

MY NECK SLIMMER ARRIVED!!!! + When should retired people go shopping?????

I am now the proud owner of a Neck Slimmer.

It cost the less than $18.00 (now as low as $5.95) I paid on Amazon (including shipping and handling)?  We are about to see.  I have a friend that uses one daily and has for several years.  Her neck and face tell me that this small, inexpensive devise really does work.

Is there anything else I should be trying out?  Let me know.

SHOPPING
My husband and I went to Costco to pick up pictures from the photo dept.  It is Monday.  Is Monday a really bad day to go shopping or is it only at Costco?  I'm going to try a different day of the week next time.  I have been retired for 13 years and it still surprises me when I go out on a Monday and things are still as busy as they are on the weekend.  Don't those people have a job and why aren't they there?  Sigh!!!  We generally stay away from golf courses and stores on the weekend...it seems only right since we can use those facilities anytime of the week.  One of these days we are going to get it right.

I noticed the article from Zemanta giving information on what time of day to go to the Post Office.  I thought you might find that interesting too.
